2021 Dynasty Buys - TE Irv Smith Jr.
Dynasty Buys after the 2020 season:
Irv Smith Jr (MIN)
Irv Smith is heading into his 3rd year as the Vikings TE, and will be 23 when next season starts. He has decent size for a TE (6’2” 240lbs) and ran a quick 4.63 at the combine. This past year, Smith finished as the TE22 (PPR) with 30 receptions, 365 yards, and 5 TDs on 43 targets in 13 games. He did this while playing next to Kyle Rudolph, who had 28 receptions, 334 yards, and 1 TD on 37 targets in 12 games. An important stat to look at, especially for TE’s, is targets in the red zone. Cousins prefers to throw to Smith in the red zone compared to Rudolph, as Smith had 12 red zone targets this year (same as Justin Jefferson) compared to only 5 for Rudolph. I expect the target share, both in and out of the red zone, to be in Smith’s favor going forward.
Rudolph is one of the biggest things stopping Irv Smith from being a fantasy TE1, not to mention Thielen, Jefferson and Cook. I believe that there is enough volume for the starting TE in Minnesota to be at least a low TE1. Unfortunately, Rudolph is signed through the next 3 seasons, so it may be a while until Irv Smith becomes the fantasy TE that he has the potential to be. On a positive note, he’ll only be 26 when Rudolph’s contract is up. This is still very young and there is still a good chance he takes the job from Rudolph before then. Do yourself a favor and trade for Irv Smith in dynasty leagues, as his value is way too low for a talented, pass-catching TE.
