2021 Fantasy Football Sleeper - WR Amon-Ra St. Brown
2021 Sleeper: Amon-Ra St. Brown
The Detroit Lions are a complete unknown. They will be entering 2021 with a new head coach, play caller, quarterback and wide receiver room. As a whole this team sports a unanimous bottom 5 roster in the NFL, leading to what looks like a lost season for a rebuilding organization. For fantasy purposes this is not necessarily a bad thing, however. There should be tons of point chasing and pass attempts up for grabs, which leads to the WR position. The team’s top 3 receivers from 2020 all signed elsewhere, and their “big” offseason veteran signings were underwhelming journeymen field stretchers Breshad Perriman and Tyrell Williams. Both players are decent role playing outside WRs but do not move the needle much or really fit what the mostly conservative Jared Goff will mesh with.
That leaves the slot position a wide open competition that should be won by rookie 4th round pick Amon-Ra St. Brown. St. Brown had a lot of 2nd round NFL draft buzz but slipped some due to more explosive options going earlier. Despite not being the biggest (6’0, 197) or fastest (4.51 40) his college production was sensational at USC. As a freshman Amon-Ra caught 60 receptions for 750, then followed this up with 77-1,042 as a sophomore. His final season was affected by Covid and limited to 6 games, yet he managed to catch at least 5 balls in every game (including a 4 TD game).
This young breakout age and impressively consistent play is a great sign of things to come for the new Lion. While he seems destined to finish behind star TE TJ Hockenson and RB D’Andre Swift in targets I expect St. Brown to be the next in line to connect with Goff as a Cooper Kupp Lite like safety blanket in the short and intermediate level. As a late late round draft pick (should be available as late as the last round or simply off waivers) you may be getting a solid flex/WR4 in PPR for basically free.
