2021 NFL Draft Prospect - RB Elijah Mitchell

2021 NFL Draft Prospect – RB Elijah Mitchell

5’10 2/8″, 215 lbs, 31″ arm, 76 5/8″ wingspan from Louisiana- Layfette

Everyone always asks “Who is the next UDFA (undrafted free agent) that is going to become the next NFL and Fantasy Football star, like Phillip Lindsay or James Robinson?” That Running Back could be the 5’11’ 215 pound RB from Louisiana-Layfette, Elijah Mitchell. It is speculated that he could be drafted between the 5th and 7th round of the 2021 NFL Draft. This gives him about a 50% chance of being drafted at all.

Elijah Mitchell has an impressive collegiate resume. He ran for the Rajun’ Cajuns’ for four years and put up 3,267 rushing yards on 527 attempts (6.2 yards per carry). He rushed for 42 touchdowns. Mitchell was also good in the passing game with 49 receptions, 597 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also has a reputation for holding the ball tight and close with only 4 fumbles, 0 lost in 4 years.

At his pro-day he weighed in at a much slimmer 201 lbs and ran 4.32 in the 40 yard dash. He projects as a three down back, he has the size and the ability to be a between the tackles runner. He is a good runner after contact and he can find the hole and run downhill with good vision. One knock on his game is the ability to get to the corner but maybe that changes now that he has slimmed down and said he changed his diet. He’ll need to continue to work on his speed to separate himself from other backs. Like most RBs that come out of college, pass-protection is something that he has to work on but he did well with it in the Senior Bowl.

Mitchell will not be drafted to a team where he can be a day one starter, in fact he will probably be drafted to a team where he is 3rd on the depth chart and probably a special teamer but if he shows up strong in training camp and/or an injury happens, Mitchell is the type of runner that can take over and win a spot. The New York Giants are a team that could be a target for Mitchell and put him on the depth chart behind Saquon Barkley and Devonte Booker.
