Houston vs Kansas City Fantasy Impact
Welcome back to football!
It was awesome to watch a game and I am so hype to recap a game and talk about fantasy impact. The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs looked like the defending champs last night after putting a pretty thorough beating on the Houston Texans. The 34-20 score was padded with a garbage time rushing score from Deshaun Watson so it was more one sided than the final suggests.
I wouldn’t say there were any major surprises but there were definitely some things to take away on the fantasy side. In no particular order here are some things that jumped out at me.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire looked great on the ground but did not catch a pass and was only targeted twice. The hype for CEH was definitely not based on him getting 25 carries but on his pass catching prowess. If you paid up to get CEH you are having a lovely morning and I believe the passing work comes into play sooner than later. Darrel Williams is clearly the handcuff to have. He spelled CEH for 7 carries and 2 receptions.
Patrick Mahomes is pretty good at playing QB. He did not have a crazy day by any means. 211 yards and 3 passing touchdowns. Watching the running and off balance throws he makes is truly remarkable. You paid up to get him and he is not going to disappoint barring an injury.
He spread the ball evenly amongst his top targets as well. The Texans had no answer and if CEH can run like that to keep defenses off balance, this offense will be terrifying.
Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce had solid games with 5 and 6 catches respectively and both caught a TD. Low yardage totals but they are studs and set it/forget it guys. Sammy Watkins was the top scoring pass catcher for KC putting up a 7/82/1 line. I wouldn't rush him into my lineup but I do not think he vanishes like last season. Definitely worth adding if he is on your waivers.
The Chiefs defense is legit and should be started in fantasy every week. People forget how good they were last season. They finished as the 7th defense and it was all from the second half of the year. Last night they had 4 sacks and 3 tackles for loss. I have no problem playing them weekly.
Will Fuller had a very nice game thanks to garbage time. He went for 8 catches for 112 yards and was the clear favorite for Watson. Brandin Cooks was a non-factor with 2 catches for 20 yards. I am not bailing on him but I am ranking him well behind Fuller while Fuller is healthy.
David Johnson looked very solid and made some nice moves on his long touchdown run. He had 11 carries for 77 yards and a score. DJ also grabbed 3 passes for 32 yards. If the Texans were closer on in the lead he would have gotten 20 plus touches. Love him as the RB2 you drafted him to be. Duke Johnson looked slow. He had 5 carries for 14 yards and zero catches. He would get a ton of work if DJ went down but he looks like you are not going to be able to spot start him.
Deshaun Watson had his fantasy week saved with his meaningless rushing score late in the game. He went for 253 yards 1TD 1 Int with 27 rushing yards and a TD. I chalk this up to the Chiefs D and this being his first game without Deandre Hopkins. Zero worries from me unless I see him struggle against a poor defense.
I hope everyone enjoyed last night as much as I did. Welcome back to fantasy football from myself and all the Fantasyholics admins!
